About the Campground

Available July 2 through March 31. This is a small one room cabin, located in the southern end of the Snowcrest range and is used primarily during hunting season. The elevation is 8100 feet. Moose are frequent visitors to the meadow in which the cabin lies. The cabin has a bunkbed to sleep two people. The loft is not available for public use due to safety regulations. There is a propane cookstove, with oven, and two propane lights supplied by a large propane tank outside. Basic pots, pans and utensils are provided. Renters should bring their own water. The spring, just south of the cabin, may have sufficient water for cleaning, but is unreliable. The water must be properly filtered, treated or boiled for drinking or cooking purposes. There is a woodstove for heat and firewood is stacked along the fence to the north of the cabin. The large horse pasture adjacent to the cabin is for administrative use only. The public may rent the small square corral next to the trailhead for $10.00 per day by calling the Madison Ranger District at 406-682-4253. No livestock is permitted inside the small fenced area immediately around the cabin. Cabin fee is $35.00 per night. Fee to rent cabin is non-refundable within 14 days of arrival date. Alerts and Important Information Renters must call the district office during office hours for the lock combination. Office hours are 8AM to 4:30 PM (Mountain Time) Mon-Fri, closed on Federal holidays. Bears frequent the area. There is a mandatory Food Storage Order in effect March 1 through December 1 annually. All food and garbage must be properly stored and made unavailable to wildlife. Contact the Madison Ranger District for details. Hay and feed, including grain, must be certified weed seed free. Potential exposure to hantavirus due to presence of mice droppings in cabins. Rodenticide may be in use in cabin. Take appropriate precautions to avoid ingestion by children and pets. No garbage service provided. Please Pack it in. Pack it out. No cleaning service provided. Renters must clean the cabin before leaving. Cleaning supplies are provided. This is a primitive cabin. There is no electricity, sewer or water. Please replenish supply of split wood and kindling before leaving. Do not chop wood on the porch. Cell phone coverage is minimal to none. Users of Antone should bring all drinking, cooking and washing water. The nearby spring is unreliable. Livestock can be watered in the Bonita Fork, about 1/2 mile northwest of the cabin. Propane stove and light instructions are posted in the cabin. The valve on the tank must be opened before use and closed when leaving. Please keep the gate, at trailhead, closed and locked. The outhouse near the cabin is closed until replaced in 2009. Use the toilet at the trailhead, about 150 yards away, until then.
