About the Campground

The Basin Station Cabin is a two room structure. It is located approximately 9 miles west of West Yellowstone, MT; the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park. The cabin is open year-round and located in the Madison River Valley. It can be driven to during non-snow months as it is adjacent to a heavily travelled county road. Winter access is by snowmobile or cross country skiing/snowshoeing the 2 miles from US Highway 20. Access to Hebgen Lake is located approximately 2 miles north of the cabin with a public boat launch and adjacent Forest Service campground. For local information visit the West Yellowstone Chamber of Commerce at www.westyellowstonechamber.com. Maximum party size for the cabin is 4 people. It is a rustic cabin with no electricity or plumbing/water. There is one double bed and one set of bunk beds. There are no mattresses, just a wooden sleeping platform. There is a wood heating stove in the bedroom and wood cooking stove in the kitchen area, table and chairs, basic cooking pots and pans, dishes, an axe, shovel, broom, and mop. Visitors should bring their own cooking stove, drinking water, lantern (no candles allowed), toilet paper, bedding/pillow, and garbage bags. The cabin has no garbage receptacles; you are required to pack out what you pack in. There is an outhouse located just north of the cabin. Firewood is provided for use in the stoves. The rental fee is $30 per night for a maximum of 7 nights. Reservations can be made up to 180 days in advance. Alerts and Important Information * Grizzly bears and other animals frequent the area. The Gallatin National Forest is under a food storage order from March 1 through December 1 annually and requires that "unattended food, refuse, and attractants be stored in hard sided buildings, hard sided vehicles, approved bear resistant containers, or hung at least 10 feet clear of the ground at all points and 4 feet horizontally from any supporting tree or pole." Any violation of this requirement is punishable by a fine and/or imprisonment or both. * No burning candles in the cabin. * Water obtained from nearby natural water sources should be treated prior to use. * Must be at least 18 years old to rent the cabin. Maximum party size is 4. * No garbage service. Please bring garbage bags and pack out all that you pack in. * Check in time is 2 p.m., check out time 11 a.m. For cabin combination call the Hebgen Lake Ranger District office at 406-823-6961 M-F (office is closed weekends and federal holidays) between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on the last business day before your arrival. * Winter travel can be difficult due to deep snow, wind, low visibility, and trail signs/markers being obscured by snow. Always travel with others and be familiar with the area and traveling in avalanche terrain. * Minimize exposure to Hantavirus; avoid contact with rodents and their waste. Keep the cabin clean, store food and other attractants in sealed containers, pack out what you pack in, and notify the Hebgen Lake Ranger District of heavy rodent activity within the cabin. * Stock use at the cabin is discouraged due to lack of adequate space. * Hay/feed for stock must be certified weed-free. * Use of cabin for commercial purposes is prohibited.
