About the Campground

Located at an elevation of 3,500 feet on top of Hirz Mountain in the Cascade mountain range. Hirz Lookout is an historic 1949 steel K-brace tower that stands 20 feet above ground level overlooking the McCloud Arm of Shasta Lake and surrounding mountains. Rental Capacity & Duration: The lookout is open to the public from May 1 to October 15. The maximum capacity is four people. There are two twin beds and 2 additional mattresses in lookout cabin. No linens or bedding provided. Check in time is 2:00 p.m., checkout is 11:00 a.m. Rental is for 1 day minimum and a 4 day maximum stay per year. There is a picnic table below the lookout. Site access is difficult. High clearance vehicles are recommended for the 5 mile dirt road. Hiking 1/4 mile on a steep, slippery trail is required to reach the lookout. Appropriate footwear is recommended. This is a high cliff area/danger zone. Exercise caution, especially with children. Facilities: The lookout has no cooking facilities and no water or electricity. There is a separate vault toilet building. You will need to supply your own water, dishes, utensils, cookware and heat. Please bring garbage bags. Facility is Pack it in, Pack it out. Pets: Small pets are allowed. Dogs must be kept on a leash. Pet owners must clean up after their pet. Alerts and Important Information Contact person/renter must call (530) 275-1587 one week prior to arrival for lookout lock combination. No wood or charcoal fires allowed. Renter must obtain a free California Campfire permit for use of a portable gas stove. Smoking is only allowed in an enclosed building, vehicle or area cleared of flammable materials. Fireworks are prohibited. The lookout is on a high cliff area, exercise caution. In areas with rocky outcroppings, it is not unusual to see a rattlesnake. High clearance passenger vehicles are recommended for the 5 mile dirt road. Due to rocky, slippery, steep terrain, the last 1/4 mile section of road access to the lookout is for foot traffic only. Appropriate footwear is recommended. Rental lookout does not have running water, showers or cooking facilities.
