Did you know that fishermen in Idaho may use up to five hooks per line? Considering that Idaho is an extremely desired place to fish, with over 9,000 rivers and streams and more than 1,000 lakes, they do have some more strict rules and regulations to keep their waters contained and controlled. Idaho Fishing Regulations
The State of Idaho states:
- Bait can be Organic substances, other than rubber, wood feather, fiber,or plastic, attached to a hook to attract fish.
- You may not tamper with others traps
- A valid license is required to fish in Idaho, except fishing in a private pond if the owner has a valid Private Pond Permit from Fish and Game
- It’s illegal to catch and harvest any fish using your hands, except crayfish and bullfrogs
- Up to 5 hooks per line can be used, unless they’re specifically prohibited. If you’re fishing for salmon or steelhead, the gap between the point and shank cannot be more than 5/8 inch
- You may not use chemicals, poisons, electric current, or explosives to attempt catching or destroying fish
- Anyone who has a valid fishing license may purchase a two-pole permit
- Catch-and-release fishing is permitted but the fish species listed in the rule must be released after landing and can not be reduced to possession
- The possession limit is 3-times the daily bag limit (only after the 2 day of the season)
- Anyone under the age of 14 if not allowed to participate in fishing competitions/tournaments
- If you have been fishing or have in possession game or nongame fish, you must stop at a check station established to inspect fish, game, or licenses
Fishing License Period
Idaho fishing licenses are available as:
- Daily fishing licenses
- Annual fishing licenses
- 3-Year fishing licenses
- Lifetime fishing licenses
Free or Reduced Fee Idaho Fishing Licenses
The State of Idaho offers free fishing licenses or reduced fishing licenses for:
- Residents 65 years of age or older
- Disabled Veterans are eligible for a reduced fee hunting license and some of them come with a fishing license
- Active Military Personnel
Idaho Fishing Licenses Are NOT Required For
Residents or Non-Resident fishermen under the age of 14.
